leadership through music
The Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra consists of more than 100 young musicians ranging in age from 12 to 24. Admission is by audition only. In addition to rehearsing challenging orchestral repertoire under the guidance of Artistic Director Gemma New, musicians receive regular coaching and mentoring from the world-class musicians of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra.
The HPYO presents three concerts per season, with each full-length performance featuring different orchestral repertoire. Once per season, HPYO musicians also perform side-by-side with the HPO and a guest conductor on stage at First Ontario Concert Hall. This exciting collaboration highlights the mentorship our young musicians receive from professional HPO musicians. HPYO members may also perform in various outreach concerts as opportunities arise.
Digital 20-21 Season
The HPYO is pleased to offer virtual programming, consisting of monthly virtual coaching sessions with HPYO faculty, a virtual HPYO social featuring special guest Gemma New and a virtual performance in December of 2020, conducted virtually by Gemma New.
